CHAPTER 14: Embarrassing First Day to GYM!
Over the years, countless individuals have reached out to me with a shared concern: the overwhelming embarrassment they feel about stepping foot in the gym. Many of them express their hesitation due to a lack of familiarity with weightlifting, the intimidating atmosphere of the gym, or simply because they don’t have friends or a workout buddy to join them. I completely understand where they're coming from.
When I look back on my own fitness journey, especially during the first few weeks, it feels like it was just yesterday that I was in the exact same position. Eight years ago, I walked into the gym for the first time with a sense of uncertainty and self-doubt. Every machine, every weight, every person seemed like they knew exactly what they were doing, while I was still trying to figure out where to start. The fear of judgment, the feeling of being out of place – it was incredibly challenging. That first month was undeniably tough. I remember questioning myself constantly: “Am I doing this right? What if people are watching me and thinking I don’t belong here?”
However, what I didn’t realize back then was that this experience, as difficult as it was, was the key to my growth. It was in those early, awkward, and uncomfortable moments that I learned the most valuable lesson: the fear of judgment and failure is far worse than the reality of it. Over time, as I kept showing up – even when I felt unsure or embarrassed – I started to see progress. The small wins, whether it was lifting a little heavier, running a little longer, or simply showing up day after day, began to add up.
That’s when everything shifted. The more I stuck with it, the more confident I became. The mirror, which once felt like a judgmental reflection, began to show me the results of my hard work and dedication. I felt stronger, not just physically but mentally as well. Each day became a reminder of how far I’d come, and that progress fueled my drive to continue.
So, to anyone out there who’s feeling apprehensive about taking that first step into the gym, I want to tell you this: the hardest part is simply showing up. Once you push past that initial fear and discomfort, you’ll be amazed at how quickly things start to change. You’ll gain more confidence with every rep, every set, and every day you step through those gym doors. Soon enough, you’ll look at yourself in the mirror and be amazed by the transformation – not just in your body, but in your mindset. That’s the true power of sticking with it. Trust me, once you overcome that initial hurdle, motivation and confidence will follow, and they’ll keep pushing you towards your fitness goals. Keep going, because the best is yet to come.
