CHAPTER 4: Are ABS/abdominal muscles built in the kitchen?
YES and NO – this term gets tossed around a lot in the fitness industry, and it’s important to break it down properly. First, let’s talk about the ‘YES’ part. When it comes to your abdominal muscles, it's true that they are largely 'made in the kitchen.' What this means is that your diet plays a massive role in revealing your abs. To put it simply, you need to be mindful of what you’re eating and how much you're eating. The key factor here is managing your calorie intake, whether you're eating at maintenance level or in a calorie deficit.
In order for your abdominal muscles to be visible, you have to reduce the layer of fat covering them. And the only way to do that is by being in a calorie deficit, which means you're burning more calories than you’re consuming, allowing your body to tap into stored fat.
However, it’s not just about diet alone. For your abs to truly 'pop out,' you need to incorporate resistance training, specifically targeting your core. That’s because while your abs might start to show up as you lose fat, the muscle definition itself needs to be built through exercises that engage and strengthen your core muscles, like planks, crunches, and leg raises. Resistance training causes small tears in the muscle fibers, and through recovery, those muscles grow and become more defined.
Now, here's a common misconception: Yes, your abs can still be visible if you’re in a calorie deficit, even if you’re not doing any specific core training. If you're already lean enough, you might see some definition without actively training your abs. But here's the catch: If you want your abs to truly pop, to get that tight, sculpted look, core training is essential. The process of muscle tearing and recovery from core exercises is what really helps the muscles stand out and become more defined. Without this resistance training, your abs may not have the same level of definition, even if your body fat percentage is low.
So, the bottom line is this: Diet (calories in vs. calories out) is key to revealing your abs, but to make them truly pop and to build strength and definition, you need to include resistance training for your core in your routine.
