The Benefits of Morning vs. Evening Workouts: Finding Your Ideal Routine
When it comes to fitness, one of the most common questions people ask is: Should I work out in the morning or in the evening? The truth is, there’s no one-size-fits-all answer. Both times offer unique advantages, and ultimately, the best routine is the one that fits your lifestyle and goals. For me, the journey to finding my ideal workout time has been both challenging and rewarding.
My Shift to Morning Workouts
Over the past two weeks, I’ve fully committed to a morning workout routine—and I can confidently say, it’s been a game-changer. Waking up early to exercise has given me a sense of momentum and accomplishment that carries throughout the day. In fact, completing my workouts before sunrise makes it feel like I’ve been gifted an extra 24 hours. This new routine has not only improved my fitness but also created space in the evening to explore interests beyond my 9-to-5 corporate job.
The Challenge of Changing Habits
Adapting to this new schedule wasn’t easy. The biggest hurdle was adjusting my sleep routine—going to bed by 10 PM and waking up at 4 AM. At first, I could only manage to make it to the gym twice a week. It took discipline, trial and error, and a fair bit of self-compassion to ease into the habit. But after two consistent weeks of early morning workouts, I’ve begun to feel my body truly adjusting. My energy levels are up, my mood is more stable, and I no longer dread the sound of my alarm clock.
The Rewards of Morning Workouts
Morning workouts offer a surprising range of benefits:
-
Boosted Productivity: Starting the day with a win sets a productive tone. I feel more focused and driven during work hours.
-
Evening Freedom: With fitness checked off early, my evenings are now open for passion projects, learning new skills, or simply relaxing—without the guilt of skipping the gym.
-
Consistent Routine: Morning workouts are easier to schedule and less likely to be interrupted by work obligations, social events, or fatigue.
But What About Evening Workouts?
That said, evening workouts have their own advantages. For some, exercising after work helps relieve stress and tension. Your body is also naturally warmer and more flexible later in the day, which may enhance performance and reduce the risk of injury. Plus, if you're not a morning person, dragging yourself out of bed at 4 AM might do more harm than good.
Finding What Works for You
The key takeaway? There’s no universal “best” time to work out. It’s about tuning into your body, understanding your schedule, and choosing what helps you stay consistent. For me, the morning routine has unlocked a new level of discipline, freedom, and personal growth. The time I now have in the evenings is being channeled into building my business and investing in myself—something I never thought possible when my workouts were squeezed in after work.
If you’re considering making the switch to morning workouts, start small. Try one or two days a week and see how your body responds. With time and consistency, you might just discover your most productive and fulfilling self—before most people have even had their first cup of coffee.
